Your First Hearing Aid And What It Can Do For You

So, it’s the first time you’ve explored the notion of using a hearing aid? Rest assured you are in good company, although for many people, it takes years to get to the point of having one fitted. Age-related hearing loss is by far the most common hearing problem that we come up against. It slowly creeps up on you without you noticing the steady decline of your hearing. Have you ever sat round a table with a group of loved ones all chatting and failed to follow any of the conversations around you? Do you find yourself nodding sagely, when in fact you haven’t the foggiest idea what is going on? Have you developed the habit of using the loud speaker when holding the phone to your ear? Do your evenings normally incorporate a lively debate over the TV volume? If you’ve answered yes to the above, then you’re wise to start thinking about your options now rather than waiting until things get desperate. A hearing aid cannot provide a cure to hearing loss, but it can help to:
  • Improve sound quality
  • Provide amplification
  • Separate background noise from speech
  • Connect to the TV, telephone and mobile phones with ease
Of course it is hard to admit that things aren’t working like they used to. Denial is a comfortable place to live, for a while at least; but you will start to miss out. If your eyes need correcting, you wear a pair of glasses or contact lenses to tackle the problem. Your hearing is equally as important and the help on offer can be just as discreet. There is a real focus on product development within the industry at the moment, with huge leaps of technological advancement. This means that there has never been a better time for you to reconnect to the hearing world. If you have the opportunity, why wouldn’t you take it? There are a plethora of different hearing aids available, which can be worn in a variety of ways. When asked, we find most people like the idea of an in-the-ear (ITE) hearing aid, because it can be hidden away from view. It is worth noting however that some of the behind the ear (BTE) hearing aids, supplied with thin, transparent tubing, often prove to be more inconspicuous than an ITE. This is especially the case for those who wear their hair slightly longer. At HearingDirect we tend to find the BTE hearing aids still rank amongst the most popular for first time purchasers. In particular, the HD230 or the HD500, which are the smallest sizes available. For more information or advice on which hearing aid would best suite you, please feel free to call us and speak to one of our audiologists. We would only be too happy to help.
